Winter Street Maintenance
Winter Street Maintenance

The City is split into 8 major plow routes with a total of 334 lane miles of roadway and 207 cul-de-sacs to maintain.  The Street crew uses 4-tandem axle dump trucks and 4-single axel dump trucks, one in each of the 8 designated routes.  Each route has a support vehicle to help clear the snow from intersections and cul-de-sacs which allows the dump trucks to continue opening roadways.

Depending upon the type of winter maintenance event the crew typically starts between 1 am and 4 am.  The plowing process typically takes between 7 and 10 hours depending on the type of snowfall and the timing of the snow event.  Larger snowfall amounts may take longer, especially if it's heavy and wet.

On the second day after a snowfall, some of the main route trucks will typically be called out at 4 am to go through the routes a second time to clean up the remaining snow and take care of slick spots.  Two sidewalk machines also start the process of clearing snow from 27 miles of sidewalks and 7 miles of paved trails.
